It can be very confusing to try to understand how care funding works, whether you might be eligible for local authority or NHS support, and how much it might cost if you are paying for it yourself.
This Guide to Funding Care at Home gives you clear, plain-speaking insights into the main ways in which care is funded, other benefits and allowances that may be available to you, tips on where to start and ways to avoid surprise additional costs.
You can also download a PDF copy of the guide here, which also includes our price list, below to share with others or keep it for reference.
How much does care at home cost, and what are my funding options?
Cost is understandably a major consideration when looking into care and support.
A good starting point is to contact your local authority’s Adult Social Care Team to ask for an assessment and to talk to them about both funding and care providers in the area. They can help establish whether you would qualify for local authority support and whether they would provide any funding for your care and support.
Financially, there is a threshold above which the local authority would not provide funding. This is based on the savings and assets of the person receiving care. The threshold in England and Northern Ireland is currently £23,250 (thresholds differ in Wales, Northern Ireland & Scotland). If you have savings and assets above this level, you will be responsible for funding your own care and support.
How do care options costs compare?
While choosing care isn’t, and shouldn’t be, all about finding the cheapest option, there is often a cost-benefit to choosing care and support at home compared to moving into a care home full-time. Care at home can be 40% or more cost-effective than moving into a residential care home.
With care at home, you just pay for the care you receive. If you require more complex care, the cost can be higher, but a good care provider will work with you to tailor your support plan to your specific needs and budget.
How is the price calculated?
A good care provider will focus both on ensuring the care team are fairly paid for the work they do while at the same time keeping our prices as low as they can. Make sure you check whether the prices you’re quoted include include mileage and any extras.

We were very nervous about instructing Abney & Baker as our mum who suffers from Alzheimer’s has not reacted well to other carers in the past, but we soon realised that mum was in safe hands. In fact, Abney & Baker had been recommended to us by a friend.
All of the girls who visited mum were lovely; patient, kind, courteous, understanding. All of the admin staff we dealt with were professional, understanding and extremely responsive. We had no concerns or issues whatsoever and I would not hesitate to recommend Abney & Baker.
The support provided by Abney & Baker made a big difference to our lives, during a very difficult period. We highly recommend this fantastic company.
I have been extremely impressed by the management and the staff team who are extremely caring, pleasant, friendly, professional and really get to know the person they are supporting, showing real understanding and empathy about how they would like to be supported being responsive to their needs. The staff team are genuinely interested in the person they are supporting and includes all the family members.
