Looking for things to do in Chippenham that are easy to reach, comfortable and genuinely enjoyable? Whether you have lived in this historic Wiltshire market town all your life or you are visiting a parent here, Chippenham has plenty to offer at a gentle pace.

At Abney & Baker, our carers live and work locally, and getting out and about is a big part of how we help clients stay well. Staying active and staying connected are two of our Five Pillars of Later Life Health. Here are some of our favourite ideas.

1. Step back in time at Chippenham Museum

Chippenham Museum sits in an 18th-century townhouse in the Market Place and is free to visit, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. It tells the story of the town from prehistoric times to today, including links to Alfred the Great and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The museum has a level entrance to the left of the steps; press the silver button to ask staff to open the door. There is a lift between the two floors and an accessible toilet. The council describes the bus station as a one-minute walk away, although your pace may differ. The nearest car parks are Borough Parade (short stay) and Wood Lane (long stay). Read the museum's visitor and access information before travelling.

2. Browse the historic Friday and Saturday market

Chippenham has held a market since King John granted a charter in 1205. Today the street market runs on Fridays and Saturdays in the town centre, from 8:30am to 4pm or until traders sell out. Check for cancellations before travelling.

A weekly market trip is a simple routine with real benefits. It means fresh air, a little walking, a chat with familiar stallholders and fresh food for the week ahead. Many of our clients enjoy a market morning with their carer as part of a regular visit.

3. Catch a show or event at the Neeld

The Neeld Community & Arts Centre hosts shows and community events. Its visitor information confirms accessible entrances from Borough Parade and the Town Hall on the High Street, and welcomes assistance dogs. Contact the box office about seating and specific access needs when booking; opening hours for the box office are not performance times.

4. Visit the Yelde Hall

Just a two-minute walk from the museum, the 15th-century timber-framed Yelde Hall is one of Chippenham's oldest buildings. It opens on selected days in the warmer months and at other times by appointment. Pair it with the museum for a gentle heritage morning.

5. Enjoy Chippenham's parks and riverside

Monkton Park and John Coles Park offer places to walk and pause, and the River Avon runs through the town. Surfaces and gradients vary, so choose a short section suited to your mobility. Our guide to gentle walks near Chippenham covers routes and access cautions in more detail.

6. Explore your family history

The Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre on Cocklebury Road is a place to explore family history with grandchildren or a carer. It normally opens Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30am to 5pm, plus selected Saturdays. Advance booking is strongly recommended. Check the visitor information for Saturday dates and exceptional closures; the centre provides wheelchair access, a hearing loop and Blue Badge parking.

7. Short trips from Chippenham

Some of Wiltshire's best-loved places are a short drive away. The National Trust village of Lacock, the famous village of Castle Combe and Bowood House and Gardens near Calne all make memorable day trips. Accessibility varies, so check each site's information before you go.

8. Festive events in the town centre

Check Chippenham Town Council's events calendar for current festive events, venues and access arrangements. Confirm the specific event before travelling rather than relying on dates from previous years.

Staying active and connected matters

Getting out of the house regularly is about much more than passing the time. It keeps muscles strong, supports memory and confidence, and reduces loneliness. These are exactly the things that help people stay independent at home for longer.

That is the idea behind our preventative home care. Our clients need 37% fewer care hours than the UK average, because we focus on keeping people strong, safe and connected before problems start.
